As parents and caregivers, we all want our little ones to feel confident and connected — and language plays such a big part in that. But what happens when those first words aren’t coming as expected, or communication feels a little tricky?

That’s where early intervention can make a real difference.

At Day by Day Early Intervention, we work closely with families of toddlers to support communication from the ground up — through play, connection, and everyday routines.

Here’s what that looks like in practice.

First, What Is Early Intervention?

Early intervention refers to therapy and support provided to children aged 0–6 who may be experiencing developmental delays or difficulties. In the case of language development, that might mean a toddler who:

  • Isn't using many words yet

  • Struggles to follow simple instructions

  • Is hard to understand

  • Isn’t engaging or responding in the way you’d expect

  • Is communicating mostly through gestures, pointing, or sounds

You don’t need a diagnosis to access support — just a feeling that something’s not quite typical, or that you’d like help knowing how to support your child’s communication.

What Does Support Look Like for Toddler Language?

Our early intervention speech pathologists focus on functional, play-based support that’s easy to implement in real life. We don’t rely on flashcards or drills — we work with families, right where they are, using what your child already loves.

Here’s how we typically support families:

👪 Parent Coaching

We show you how to build language into everyday routines like getting dressed, playing outside, bath time, or reading together. You’re your child’s best teacher, and we’re here to guide you.

🎯 Goal-Based Strategies

We work with you to create goals that matter — like helping your child say “more” when they want a snack, or understand simple directions like “get your shoes.”

🗣️ Modelling Language

We model strategies like using simple, repetitive language, expanding on your child’s attempts (“Dog!” → “Yes, big dog!”), and giving your child plenty of time to respond.

🧸 Play-Based Therapy

Sessions are based on your child’s interests — whether that’s cars, dolls, water play, or dinosaurs. We use these interests to build turn-taking, joint attention, imitation, and vocabulary.

💬 Alternative Communication

For some children, we explore AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) tools like picture boards, key word signs, or iPad apps to support early communication.

The Role of Families in Early Language Development

You don’t need to be a speech therapist to support your toddler’s language — you just need a few tools and the right support. That’s why our sessions often happen in your home or kindy, or include coaching for everyday routines.

We’ll work with you to:

  • Learn how to respond to your child’s communication attempts

  • Build new words into the moments you already share

  • Reduce frustration by supporting understanding

  • Celebrate the little wins — because they matter so much!

Every Child Communicates Differently — And That’s Okay

Whether your child is a quiet observer, a busy explorer, or a big feeler with lots to say but not many words yet — we’ll meet them where they are and help them move forward.

And we’ll support you, too. Because when families feel confident and connected, kids thrive.
